the 6mas message

Hi

just a "brief" pre-christmas message.

Firstly i'd like to thank everyone who has bought or broadcast my music, organised or come to gigs, contributed to the recordings by playing on them or having the faith to release them.

This year has seen a lot of releases even by my standards which, in case you blinked, have been:

'live' (october man 2cdr)
'CUT' (editions6)
'un/CUT' (editions6 - limited bonus CD)
'OLD' (cathedral transmissions download / limited box set)
'30 seconds of time' (silber - songs for the impatient)
'further loops notes and sketches' (TQA Records double 3" cdr with absent without leave)
'close/r' (editions6 - 3 chords and 10 collaborators)
'merry6mas2010' (editions6)
'in time this too will fade' (tonefloat clear vinyl LP)
'DEATH' (Basses Frequences - thisquietarmy + yellow6)
'heavy with snow' (abgvrd 3" cdr - due any day now)

it has also seen the completion of an album with Larkian for release in 2011 by Basses Freqences and the completion of 2 volumes in the series of 3 LPs by The Sleep of Reason (with Dirk Serries) which will appear in some form in 2011 with a debut live appearance in Tilburg in February.

I also did gigs in Paris, Lille, Bethune, Wanquetin, Gent, Antwerp, Nottingham (twice) and London.

so that's about all... people occasionally ask what i've been listening to so, for those interested, here's some of the things i've enjoyed this year - not all released during 2010 but things i either bought, found, or played a lot:

Richmond Fontaine - Postcards From Portland (chosen as it was released this year but i've bought 4 of their older albums as well, particular favourite being Thirteen Cities)
Dangermouse/Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The soul
Pan American - White Bird Release
Silver Mount Zion - Kollaps Traditionelles
Microphonics - lots of stuff
Arcade Fire - Suburbs
The National - High Violet
Tortoise - Why Waste Time?
Philip Glass - Etudes for Piano (very old but i only heard it this year)
Signals - gauss (Mark Beazley from Rothko)
Johnny Cash - American VI

there's probably loads more, and i've been listening to Joy Division a lot too (nothing unusual there)

so, thanks once more for your support and hope to see some of you in 2011

reviews, sell-outs etc.

hi
just a brief update with a couple of reviews from those fine folks at Norman Records and a shop update...
Shop first...
the Package Deal has now been removed - huge thanks to those that ordered in advance. Black vinyl copies of Death are in the mail from Basses Frequences so your orders will be sent out as soon as i get those.
I've also removed 'In Time This Too Will Fade' temporarily as i've sold the first batch but there will be more... lastly, Merry6mas2010 has almost sold out so if you want one be quick. Get that last minute christmas present for the person who has everything

so, to the reviews....
In time this Too Will Fade:
Another cheerily titled album! I think my first album (which I've been writing for the last 30 years) is gonna be called 'I was born and then I died and I can't remember what happened in between'. Pretty apt I think and I'm sure I can get Cowell on board with a catchy title like that. Back to the 6meister. This rare vinyl excursion (you don't get too much Yellow 6 on vinyl these days!) is limited to just 100 copies. It's on the Tonefloat label, is hand-numbered, wax-stamped and limited to a paltry 100 copies. Oh it's on clear vinyl too. Here the 6man plays with feedback, piano and acoustic guitar with his usual aplomb. As ever it's the usual moving cinematic sounding stuff which conjures up the whole desolate landscape imagery. Having said that I think it's probably the best thing I've heard by him in ages. I've not even played side 2 yet. Far too obsessed with side 1 and its gentle post-rockery. I can't think of a post-rock record I've heard in ages which I've liked but finally there is one and this is it! It's emotive shit with it's simple guitar refrain and Godspeed-esque feedback in the background. Truly excellent.

and... Death:
Now this is a real nice sounding record. If death sounds like this I'll happily slip away.... Erm.... As soon as I've seen Emeralds tonight. Not now. Oh Satan, take him instead, please! Yes! That man over there who just broke our toilet lever! How do you actually break a toilet lever? I despair. Anyway, enough digression. This collab is neither too doomy or particularly drifty. There's a tingly, dusty desert vibe throughout with some quietly ominous waves of impending doom on the fringes. 'Furnace' errs more toward desolate, shimmering dark ambience, but once more with a tumbleweed-y Godspeed feel on the backburner. Incredibly atmospheric & strangely beautiful, this is a piece to turn up real loud with some strategically placed candles dotted around. It's not often I feel like I'm hearing the distant wails of lost souls in a vast echo-laden sphere. I can hear them here. 'Salt' takes up the entirety of side two and is the epic journey to finish them all. If you ever wondered what a nervous Jon Yellow6 would sound like plonked on a stool by a pile of coyote skulls in the Nevada desert then you probably need to hear this very spectral record. It's a bit of a treat.

Jon.

Death

this morning Death arrived at my doorstep... a figure draped in black and carrying a scythe stepped from the Royal Mail van and with a boney finger pointed at where to sign for the box of 40 shiny gold LPs.... begone evil beast i cried, but leave the records. the figure got back in the van and drove slowly away into the falling snow....

Death Reviews

http://www.textura.org/reviews/thisquietarmy_yellow6.htm

thisquietarmy + yellow6: DeathBasses Frequences
Not the most uplifting title, now is it? Don't let that put you off, however, as what we've got here is a fine mini-album collaboration between two guitar innovators, specifically thisquietarmy (Montreal-based Eric Quach) & Yellow6 (UK producer Jon Attwood). After first meeting in Montreal on March 13th 2009 before individually taking part in the sixth annual Under The Snow Festival, the two escaped from the cold Canadian winter weather by retreating to Quach's living quarters and winging it for two hours while a computer documented their efforts. Mixing and editing came about a year later for a project that now conceptually assumes a character diametrically opposite to the chilly conditions under which it came into being. As its cover photography suggests, the title Death perhaps references more the inevitable outcome that arises when one vainly attempts to survive a solo journey across the arid and unforgiving desert than it does to a state of being in general. The opener “Sand” builds stark, tensile tones into cross-hatches of querulous shudder, the track generally cultivating bleak moods of dread and isolation. With the blistering heat of the sun mercilessly beating down, “Furnace” conveys the traveler's gradual realization that death is inevitable under such circumstances. Inner anguish wells up within his/her soul as he/she trudges on, the intertwining guitar lines now shadowed by hellish wails that may or may not be the product of hallucinations. Two-thirds of the way into the piece, a violent guitar stab pierces the gloom, perhaps symbolizing the traveler's horror of impending demise as reality sets in. But immediately thereafter a hint of uplift arrives in “Salt,” though whether the gesture should be interpreted as an unexpected adjournment of death or as a transcription of the inner disorientation that colours his/her final moments can't be determined. Regardless, “Salt” unspools seventeen minutes of droning guitar vapours in a manner that'll be familiar to long-term thisquietarmy admirers (don't miss the brief surge that almost engulfs the whole at the fifteen-minute mark). We're told that Death is part one of two installments in the collaborative effort between the two, so hopefully the next chapter will make its appearance in the near future (the CD version includes two bonus tracks, an extra studio session track called “Crater” and an improvised live piece performed at the Under the Snow festival the day after the recording session).

Death’ is a collaboration between guitarists and fast-friends Eric Quach (thisquietarmy) and Jon Attwood (Yellow 6). Three tracks over 2 sides, “Sand”, “Furnace”, and “Salt” are a loosely- and minimally-themed triptych of metal-ringed vibrations and elongated effects, bleary and blurry somewhere between the abstraction of Taiga Remains and the cinemaphonics of Steven R. Smith. If necessary, a drone record, ‘Death’ defies the comfort of the category with contours of stringed strum like uneven boards with unsunken nails - snags along the surface – which reveal themselves with time, growing more and more apparent through the 7, 12, then 17 minute tracks which ultimately become a vaporous mass of bled-together tones. Gorgeous but/and longing. Available soon from Basses Frequencies

10th C RELEASES WITH YELLOW6

as someone who grew up on punk in the early 80s, yellow6's jon attwood knows that three chords can change the world. in fact, his own music is based on the very same promise – even though his means of playing them are strikingly different.

on in time this too will fade, roughly his 80th release in just over a decade, attwood again leads his audience into his emotional vortex of slowly rotating acoustic and electric guitar themes, repeating and almost imperceptibly varying until all sense of space, time and direction is lost. appearing mournful and melancholic only at first sight, these three rituals, of which opener 00:30 alone takes up the entire a-side, lead listeners inwards, to a place where hope and consolation can be found through harmony and silence. even though echoes of post rock and ambient are clearly discernible, yellow6's influences rather stem from a string of idiosyncratic musicians at the fringe between trip-hop (portishead's adrian utley), dark folk (sophia), moody post-metal (jesu) and drones (fear falls burning). ignoring the hype-machine of the traditional music industry, attwood caters to no expectations but his own, recording only when inspiration hits him. or as he simply puts it: "sometimes things happen and sometimes they don't".

both more elegiac and tender than his recent, wilfully experimental full-length cut, in time this too will fade resembles a gently rolling hillside in the night, drenched in a glowing beam of moonlight. although the album differs from its predecessors in the sense that these pieces were played live first before recording them in the studio, this is still very much music capable of moving its audience without any kind of complicated concepts: attwood is picking his guitar, soft feedback and overtones are floating in the air and a single moment is stretching into infinity. it may not change the world – but it may just change your life.

in time this too will fade is released on tonefloat's c-imprint on clear vinyl and in a limited edition of 300 copies. the release date is november 29, 2010, and the album is available for pre-orders from the tonefloat store.

Release News

A couple of things about forthcoming releases....

Cathedral Transmissions will be releasing a cdr of demo recordings from the genesis of Yellow6 entitled 'OLD'. Recorded between 1995 and 1997, these 8 tracks preceded the first Yellow6 releases. They were recorded on 4-track tape or 4-track minidisc recorders and mixed to cassette, with tape transfer and mastering by Daniel Lovegrove at Code-Red. This will be available from Cathedral Transmissions website soon.

There will also be an incredibly limited box set version. there will only be 6 copies of this packaged in a box containing OLD along with all the Yellow6 material released by October Man (Loops, Notes and Sketches, Live, If You See Something Say Something)

Three copies will be available as auctions on eBay shortly. Full details are here:

http://www.cathedraltransmissions.com/page2.htm

more on that as soon as they are available.

Also coming soon will be the LPs In Time This Too Will Fade on Tonefloat and the TQA/Y6 split 'Death' on Basses Frequences (test pressings are done) and the CD close/r on Editions6.
Merry6mas is also underway so will be available in November. I plan to make available a package deal where you can buy the 2 LPs and 2 CDs together and they will all be shipped at the same time. watch for news...

samples of close/r are available to listen to at the Yellow6 soundcloud page:

long awaited (meaning i've taken my time) release...
how long can you make 3 chords last? in this case, 75 minutes.

A live version of this track was included on the LIVE cdr released by October Man, recorded at Union Chapel - one of only two live performances of this piece to date.
This will be a limited CD on my own Editions6 label in a recycled card sleeve with rubber stamp. Most likely an edition of 300 copies (certainly no ore) available by mail order and from selected retailers.

Saturday 31 July 2010

news about nothing much, end of July 2010

Hi
Been a while since the last update so here’s a bit of news…. Life tends to get in the way sometimes so you don’t get to spend the time you would like to on the fun things…. Not so much time for music of late, but I’ve got some things done….

I have completed the 6th track of the collaboration with Larkian. We now have to do some mixing and editing and decide on a running order, but this should appear on CD later this year.

Also coming nicely is the result of my meeting with Eric Quach (thisquietarmy)… we met in Montreal last year when I played at Under The Snow and had arranged in advance to get together and play a bit. We improvised for about 2 hours or so and then Eric edited and mixed the recordings (just the two of us with guitars and effects). The results are to be released by Basses Frequences. The plan has only just been formulated, but it will be a two volume vinyl release with each LP being one long and two shorter tracks with a themed sleeve design and some bonuses… more in the next few months.

The ToneFloat LP [in time this too will fade] will be going into production soon scheduled for an autumn release.
There has been a delay to the release of ‘heavy with snow’, a 3” cdr release for Moscow label ABGVRD. Due to the warm summer weather this has been put back to later in the year when it is less likely to melt in the sunshine.

I had a recent experimental recording session playing live in a big room with 6 microphones close and distant. Results were pleasing so I’m planning another session to do some backing tracks for new material.

No live shows planned for now, but I’m interested in any offers for UK shows…

Lastly for now, I am selling some gear to fund a new 6-string bass. A couple of guitars are on eBay now (ending 07 Aug 2010) – both were used in recording parts of CUT. One is a candy apple red Fender Jazzmaster FSR Thin Skin model and the other is a Fender Telecaster 52 Hot Rod with Bigsby tremolo. I will probably also be selling a Peavey Milestone bass and Danelectro U2 Baritone once I get the new bass…

If you are interested, auction item numbers are: 250675008350 and 250675010850

Even more lastly, I have a few copies of CUT with bonus disc un/CUT left… you can buy through the shop page on the website, and if you already have, please tell a friend!

Review

back from a week in sunny Florida (so far oil free beaches but unfortunately the outlook is not good) to a sunny England.
a nice review of CUT has been posted at the Leonard's Lair blog site:

Hard to believe that ‘Cut’ is only the tenth full length album from Yellow6 such is the prolific recording career of Jon Attwood. Perhaps more tellingly, ‘Cut’ is also his 79th release in total – not bad for twelve years’ work. Now producing music on his own label, ‘Cut’ traces another journey of guitar-led minimalism.
‘Cut’ itself is a running theme of the album, with four different versions of it making an appearance. The first ‘Cut’, if you will, is the deepest since its delayed melody is totally spine-tingling although the final (‘Cut#4′) version runs it close. ‘Butterfly Girl’ features chords donated by another musician (Beth Georgiou) which are performed chillingly and beautifully by Attwood; rarely has repetition been this captivating, even from Attwood himself who is something of a master in this field.
After this superb start, the music drifts in to familiar ambient/post-rock territory of the darkest hue with clear nods to Labradford along the way (particularly on ‘Cut #3′). Experiments in other instruments yield great results with ‘Diagnosis (Two)’ picking up the pace and urgency with real drums, whilst ‘Cut/Piano’ represents Attwood’s output in its most funereal form.Granted, there’s a lot here which will be very familiar to anyone who has owned a Yellow6 record. Once again the running time exceeds an hour, the same influences remain but Attwood is at least on top melodic form.

review and stuff...

hi

just a brief update.... the only review (outside of Norman Records and Boomkat) of CUT has show up in Rock-a-Rolla:

"Close to 80 releases under his belt, the prolific one-man guitar outfit Yellow6's latest offering is all sparse guitar-scapes and minimalist post-rock, deelpy melancholic in outlook and execution. Whilst not quite covering new ground, it's one that fans of solo guitar explorers and instrumental post-rock will find pleasing no end" (Review by Bobby Bone)

last few copies of the CD with bonus are available at the yellow6.com shop page (any orders between 10-18 June will be shipped out on 19th)

the 3" cdr release "Heavy With Snow" on Russian label ABGVRD should be out late June - more news when it arrives.
mixing is ongoing for the next Editions6 release "close/r" which will probably be out around September, a similar timescale to the album on ToneFloat

that's it for now
thanks for reading

Boomkat

this is what the nice people at Boomkat had to say about CUT... in stores NOW (if you can find a store) and copies with bonus CD still available here....

A momentous tenth album in the Yellow6 discography, Cut offers a new nine-track selection of works from Jon Attwood, who largely plays out the entire record by himself, layering delicate strands of Robin Guthrie-influenced guitar, one upon another. There is a little outsider intervention: Dave Collingwood of Gravenhurst lends a hand with drums on 'Diagnosis (Two) and Mark Beazley of Rothko (another big influence on Attwood, you'd suspect) is on hand to master the album, but the tone of the record is generally that of a real loner opus. For the title track (which, incidentally, is brilliantly reconfigured as a piano piece later on in the album's sequence), Attwood traipses through gossamer guitar arpeggios and Twin Peaks-like cinematic tremolo leads, all building up to a gorgeous and deeply resonant piece of slow-core post-rock. Another of Attwood's finest moments comes with the gently panoramic 'If You See Something, Say Something (Third Version)', whose title seems to be a cumbersome approximation of something Roy Walker used to say on Catchphrase. Here, guitars thread loosely together in the most beautiful fashion, while minuscule, crackling percussive gestures lay out backdrop of static and micro-beats. Excellent.

Yellow6 NEWS 24 April 2010

Hi.
Just back from an enjoyable and successful trip to play in France and Belgium, 3 of the shows being with Dirk Serries’ Microphonics project (highly recommended). Thanks to everyone who made it along to the gigs. I managed to survive the volcanic ash chaos by using EuroTunnel and had no problems at all… aside from a hotel cock-up after the Gent show resulting in my sleeping in the car at a service station on the E40 near Brugge. Some photos from the gigs are on the website (and MySpace / Fakebook).

I returned to boxes of CDs… CUT is here. All pre-orders were sent out during the week…huge thanks to those that ordered in advance. Hope you enjoy the 2 CDs. to those who haven't ordered yet...

CUT CD available NOW…

The new album looks and sounds great (ok, so modesty deserts me here but I’m really pleased with it).
It is available NOW from the Shop page at
www.yellow6.com and all copies ordered direct from here come with the bonus CD un/CUT (while stocks last). Please support Yellow6 and help make future releases possible by buying it direct. Thanks.

CUT delay / gig update France+Belgium

Hi

first of all, many thanks to those who have pre-ordered CUT from the website. About half the available copies with the bonus CD have gone but there's plenty still available. Order by PayPal at www.yellow6.com\shop.php (and buy up some back catalogue while you're there!) or email to jon@yellow6.com if you would like to pay by any other means or have any questions.

Official release date in stores is 10 May 2010 (or maybe a little later) but copies will be shipped out from the web orders as soon as available. This was supposed to be this week, but the manufacturer have told me not to expect delivery before 20th April so a slight delay. Copies of the bonus CD un/CUT have arrived in record time (huge thanks to Enconahead) and all pre-orders will be sent out as soon as stocks arrive. Hoping Breed Media will come through with a delivery but this week, but they didn't give much hope on the phone on Friday :-(

more info when i have it, unfortunately this mean i won't have copies for the gigs in France and Belgium (below)

Here are the full details for the gigs - note change of venue for Ghent

hope to see some of you there.

cheers
jon./Y6

CUT - available to pre-order now

Hi

spring is here, and to prove it heavy snow is forecast for England... also imminent, but much better than the weather, is the new Yellow6 album CUT (really - i love snow but it never lasts, this will!)

currently being manufactured, CUT is expected to be complete and ready to ship week beginning 12 April 2010.

Copies ordered from www.yellow6.com will come with a bonus CD only available by mail order and can be pre-ordered now from the shop page.

So, here's the all important information that will make you want to rush to the store to pre-order your copy

Info / sleeve pics / tracks to preview etc. can all be found on the CUT page

the details:
CUT (editions6 E6:02) is the 10th full length album by Yellow6, and 79th release overall (if i counted correctly). Recorded between January 2009 and January 2010 and mastered by Mark Beazley (Rothko / Trace recordings), CUT contains 9 tracks and 70 minutes of minimalist guitarscapes, repetition and melody. These songs take the listener on a journey, seemingly suspending time for their duration, with intertwining guitars, piano and percussion, and featuring drums by Dave Collingwood (Gravenhurst, Yann Tiersen) on diagnosis (two).

Lighter and more spacious than some of the former Yellow6 releases, melancholy melodies are augmented with hopeful, and even upbeat, songs. The song cycle CUT is the recurrent theme of the album appearing in a number of variations throughout.

Track listing:
01 cut
02 butterfly girl
03 if you see something, say something (third version)
04 cut#3
05 gift
06 cut/piano
07 diagnosis one
08 diagnosis two
09 cut#4

all songs composed and recorded by jon attwood
drums on ‘diagnosis two’ by dave collingwood
chords for butterfly girl supplied by beth georgiou
mastered by mark Beazley

un/CUT
un/CUT (editions6 E6:03) is a collection of recordings made during the same period as CUT. These recordings are a mixture of alternate mixes, original 'live' demo recordings, and additional tracks not included in the final album.

Track listing:
01 cut #2
02 20.1.10 (first version)
03 cut (demo)
04 butterfly girl (first version)
05 cut/piano (Mark Beazley rough mix)
06 diagnosis (two) (first version)
07 cut #2 (second version)
08 cut #2 (reprise)

additional instrumentation on cut/piano by mark Beazley

please email for further info / promo or distribution requests.

Lastly, Yellow6 will be playing the following shows in Northern France and Belgium in late April. The album will be available at shows.

April 16– Le Drugstore, Lille
April 17– le quilit quilit, Bethune
April 18– plane ari home gigs, Habarcq (with Microphonics)
April 19– Homey, Antwerpen (with Microphonics)
April 20– Anthony's, Gent (with Microphonics)

thanks for making it this far!
